Lottery Songs

With the giant American lotteries displaying huge jackpots and making the headlines with their touching winner stories on a regular basis, and Europe preparing for November 6th EuroMillions SuperDraw, when a €100 million jackpot is at stake, people everywhere around the world dream of winning the lottery. To set you in the right mood for it, here is a list of some of the best songs about the lottery and the daring dreams of hitting the jackpot. Turn the sound on and enjoy!

1. Calloway - I Wanna Be Rich

When the R & B duo Calloway released the album ‘All the Way’ back in 1990, the song ‘I Wanna Be Rich’ became an instant hit. As the name implies, the song is all about getting rich, and, obviously, the lotteries are just around the corner.

"I want my cake, wanna eat it too
I want the stars and the silver moon
In my money spent on lotteries
my barrel number is 123 "

2.  Camper Van Beethoven - When I Win the Lottery

Camper Van Beethoven is an American alternative rock band, known for its mix of guitar pop, folk and quirky lyrics. The album ‘Key Lime Pie’ released in 1989 includes a song ‘When I Win the Lottery’ where you can hear all about what the singer and songwriter David Lowery would do if he won the lottery.

“When I win the lottery
Gonna buy all the girls on my block
A color TV and a bottle of French perfume
When I win the lottery
Gonna donate half my money to the city
So they have to name a street or a school or a park after me
When I win the lottery
….
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy the house next to
Mr. Red, White and Blue
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy post 306 American legion
Paint it red with five gold stars
When I win the lottery”

3. Harry Nilsson - The Lottery Song

The American singer and songwriter Harry Nilsson was very popular in the 1970s.  ‘The Lottery Song’ included on the album ‘Son of Schmilsson’ of 1972 speaks about things people can do to be happy. Equating life to gambling, Nilsson encourages us to live our lives to the fullest:

" Ooh ooh oh oh oh
If life is just a gamble
Gamble if you want to win

Ooh ooh oh oh oh
If life can be so easy
Let the wheel of fortune spin"

Sounds familiar? Maybe you’ve heard this 2011 cover version interpreted by Bill Lloyd:
